Your Tuscany stay will be in Montepulciano, our favorite Tuscan town. It’s in the Valdorcia area, south of Siena, near Pienza and Montalcino–wine country known for its famous Barolo and Brunello wines. It’s very hilly, so put on sturdy walking shoes.
There are no elevators in the Tuscany hotels, so be prepared to carry your bags up and down some stairs (generally one flight).
In the cities, you will do a lot of walking, much of it on uneven surfaces, such as cobblestones, so be sure to wear appropriate foot gear to avoid tripping or turning an ankle, especially in ancient structures such as the Colosseum in Rome where modern safety standards do not apply.
